Espanyol are in action at their 40,000 capacity Estadio Cornellá-El Prat against another of the league’s golden oldies, Sporting from Gijón in the northern province of Asturias. It’s always an important fixture for the first Spanish club to ever wear red and white stripes, because their first division debut in 1944 was a 0-0 draw with the Parakeets. Since then, Espanyol have generally had the better league record of the two, but games between two of the Spanish clubs that most rely on locally bred talent are never easy to predict, and home win is anything but a certainty.
