Although the fact that they are two ‘lesser’ clubs in the two biggest cities in Spain, Barcelona and Madrid means that certain parallel can be drawn these two clubs, as Rayo have only spent a handful of seasons in the first division, there has been little opportunity for much of a rivalry to develop between the two. Curiously, it’s in women’s football that they have more of a history, with Espanyol and Rayo having two of the strongest ladies teams. It was also at Rayo’s old ground in Vallecas that Espanyol won their second Spanish cup title, beating Real Madrid 3-2 in 1940.
