Since Schumacher’s retirement, Barcelona world champion Fernando Alonso, winner of last is no longer as likely to be overrun by year’s race at Montmeló, but a bit pissed that they Ferrari-flag brandishing Germans as it has have had to go out and buy a whole load of new been for recent Grand Pr^K. However, we merchandising now that he has switched from can still expect hordes of very drunk Finns Renault to McLaren-Mercedes. and plenty of Spaniards here to support dual it is thanks to Alonsomania that this event has
become one of the most eagerly attended on the Formula One circuit, and there have been mutterings that Spain could be given a second Grand Prix in future championships, as Germany got at the height of Schumi’s reign. However, it has to be said that enthusiasm for the grim-faced Asturian has waned somewhat of late as the Spaniards struggle to warm to For info about tickets to see a chap who is so desperately lacking the cars and the pit babes in charisma. Typical of the stories that do nothing to endear you to Alonso is the one of FC, our sponsors on the the friends of friends of the SM editors who flew out to Australia to watch him in the first Grand Prix of the season.

Alonso

Now, travailing to the other side of the world to support your hero is quite some pilgrimage, but when the small group of fans got the chance actually meet Alonso. they probably expected a little more from their idol than to be told, basically, to bugger off out of his way After Australia, Malaysia and Bahrain we have three drivers tied on 22 points in what is sizing up to be one of the most interesting editions for many a year. Alonso, chasing his third consecutive driver’s title is one of them Then there’s Finn Kimi Raikkonen, in his first year at Ferrari, and someone who is surely going to win the world championship some time or other, and third we have the guy who has taken Formula One by storm this year, English rookie Lewis Hamilton. who is not only the first ever coloured driver in F1. but became the first ever driver to secure a podium finish in each of his first three outings. although he has yet to secure his maiden win

The guy who looks set to be the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for the next ten years or so is being touted by many. including Jackie Stewart, as potentially the greatest driver the world has ever known

Getting back to this years race. and Barcelona is the perfect venue for Formula One Great weather. well communicated and the track itself. with long straights and a variety of corners. is considered an ideal all-rounder. It s so good in fact that it is by far the most popular testing ground for teams The problem with this is that as drivers and mechanics are so extremely familiar with it, the race is often anything but a challenging test Its almost entirely flat. the corners are very run of the mill. and the overtaking (which is surely the essence of the whole damned sport) can be alarmingly rare.

The dynamics of the Circuit de Catalunya mean that as cars come into the fast final corner the turbulence makes it nigh on impossible to get close to anybody in front which has the knock on effect of it then being extremely difficult to catch up on the straight in time to have another bash at arguably the circuit s only natural overtaking point the first turn

It really is a shame to have to admit it. but the dish water in the Montmelo canteen can often provide more interesting entertainment than anything happening out on the asphalt But that shouldn’t make too much of a difference If you are a real Formula One fan you will know how to appreciate the f ner points of the sport. and f you are just there for the day out. you won t have a clue what s going on anyway and probably won t even be able to tell which one is Raikkonen and which one is Felipe Massa

If you have a general admission ticket it’s worth taking a walk round to find the best place Circuit de Catalunya is better than most F1 circuits for spectator viewing, so there are quite a lot of good places to watch the race from (although these are getting less and less each year as they build more grandstands) Even f you have a grandstand seat you can usual y go to other stands if you go early on Saturday or on Frday Try a stint opposite the pits to watch the teams in act on They normally only get strict about where you can go for qualifying and the race You II f nd a ot of stands and exhibitions for the teams dotted around too. especially behind the main grandstand (Area Este) The earlier you go the better the view you oet. If you want to see who’s really trying, be at the first corner (Area Sur) Braking from 31 Okmh down to 130kmh shows who s got the balance right on the car and how fast they really want to go This is also the best place for overtaking. To get a good view of the cars for more than a couple of seconds go to the last part of the lap at Area Norte. where the winding curves can throw some drivers into the gravel and you may be able to see them dive into the pits.
